Overview
With Custom Attributes, you can create custom fields in DocketWise for Contacts and Matters. These attributes can be:
Tracked and filled on the Contact or Matter overview page
Added to Custom Intakes for clients to complete
Included in Automated Templates
Used in reports and as filters in Contact and Matter Reports

Attribute Types
There are six Custom Attribute types, letting you ask, document, track, and report on almost anything:
Text – any combination of text, numbers, spaces, and symbols
Number – numbers only
Date – date format only
Boolean – true/false
List – choose from a list of options
Expiry Date – date format only
Creating Custom Attributes
To create a new Custom Attribute, follow the steps below:
Navigate to Settings > Custom Attributes
Click the + New Custom Attribute button
Give your Custom Attribute a name
Choose the Attribute Type (and include list items if creating a list type)
Indicate whether the Custom Attribute is to be assigned to a Contact or Matter
Click the Create button
Viewing and Updating a Contact's/Matter's Custom Attributes
To view or update a contact’s or matter’s Custom Attribute, follow the steps below:
Navigate to the Contact's/Matter's overview page
Click the pencil icon for the Custom Attribute value that you would like to set
Enter the desired value
Click the Update button

Custom Expiry Dates
Custom Expiry Dates let you add extra, customizable expiration dates. They work like other Expiry Dates in DocketWise, sending reminder notifications before the event.
Expiry Date Reminders Settings
To set up Automatic Expiry Date Reminder Settings for your Custom Expiry Date, follow the steps below:
Navigate to Settings > Expiry Date Reminders
Click the New Reminder Setting button
Select the Custom Expiry Date under Expiry Date Type
Choose the Event Calendar where is going to be saved
Select the default recipient(s) of the reminder (admin/all firm members/assignee(s) of associated contact)
Indicate how long before the expiry date you would like to have the notification sent by selecting the unit of time and entering a corresponding numerical value
Click the Save Reminder Setting button
Creating the Expiry Date Event/Reminder
To set up an expiry date reminder for a contact in DocketWise, follow the steps below:
Navigate to the contact's overview page
Select the Expiration Dates tab
Enter the expiry date under the appropriate expiry date category
Hit Enter/Return on your keyboard
Once the date is entered, if an expiry date reminder is already set, DocketWise will create an event with a notification based on your reminder settings.
Note: Custom Expiry Dates may only be made at the Contact level.
Custom Attributes in Custom Intakes
In addition to setting a Custom Attribute on the contact or matter overview page, you can ask clients to provide this information through a Custom Intake.
To ask a client for this information, either create a new Custom Intake Template or add the questions to an existing one under Settings > Custom Intakes. Click here to learn more about Custom Intakes.
To add these questions to a Custom Intake Template, follow the steps below:
Navigate to the Custom section
Locate the Custom Question relating to your Custom Field
Click the pencil icon to edit the question being asked (optional)
Click the slider bar to active and the question will be added to your Custom Intake
Note: If a Matter Custom Attribute is present in the Custom Intake, the Smart Form must be assigned to a matter to populate these fields.
Custom Attributes in Automated Templates
Automated Templates let you create documents in DocketWise that auto-populate with information using Merge Tags.

To view the list of Merge Tags related to your Custom Attributes, follow the steps below:
Navigate to Settings > Automated Templates
Click the + New Template button
Click the Custom Attributes tab
Custom Attributes in Reporting
In DocketWise, Custom Attributes can be included in reports and used as filters alongside other criteria. They are available in the following report types:
Contact Reports
Contacts over time
Matter Reports
Matters over time
Matters by status
Matters by preference category
To report on or filter by Custom Attributes, follow the steps below:
Navigate to your DocketWise Dashboard
Click the Create New ▼ button
Choose the Report option
Choose the type of report you would like to create
Click the Filter by Attributes button
Indicate the criteria for your Custom Attribute filters
Click the Update button
